Machinima documentary shot in Second Life, 30 min

Image: still from video
In this work, Segal set out on a journey in the virtual world created online by participants in Second Life. This world simulates actions from the real world in a realistic fashion, while allowing them to be represented by an avatar (virtual figure) of their choosing – even one with super powers. The first part of the video features a scene in which the participants sit around the bonfire, in a kind of 3-D version of a chatroom for philosophy aficionados debating the universal meaning of being. Like Second Life itself, the philosophers’ bonfire is suggestive of the purgatory that exists between life and death. The final scene takes place in a virtual gallery (called No Matter, What?) created by Segal in Second Life, which features, among other things, new media works of hers that exist only in cyberspace.
