The Shining
Mixed media: Roulette, wood, engine, software, sensors
This
light artwork consists of fragments of panels of unpolished glass and
an incandescent lamp.
From a particular angle one can discern a multi-layered reflection of
these elements in
each other – creating an attractive lighting effect. The object’s
plain appearance belies its
grandiose English title (The
Shining), with its
associations with ballrooms, crystal and splendor
as well as to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, The
Shining.
The Hebrew title, too – Neḥamah Purta (from Aramaic, “scant comfort”) – suggests economic discordance. The seductive guise of the capitalist marketing ploy of suggesting prestige is an illusion forged from nothing more than a glittering pile of glass fragments – a “poor man’s chandelier” that suggests positive thinking as a manipulation of desire.
